Bison, Rubbing a Rock.
Bulls may weigh as much as 1000-2000 pounds, and this large male was an awesome site at close quarters. The massive head is used to butt other bulls during the rut. The horns may be used to 'hook' another animal, and can easily kill another bison. These magnificent creatures roamed the prairies, but were also found throughout the entire North American continent, from the Northwest Territories of what is now Canada, south to Texas and Mexico, and east to South Carolina and Georgia. Nearly eradicated both by hunting and government policies of the time, the bison of the Great Plains of North America are an essential symbol of the need for ecological preservation in this country.
